Established in 1996, the Department of Electrical Engineering of the National Institute of Science and Technology offers programmes leading to Bachelor's Degree, Master's Degree as well as Ph.D. The four year undergraduate programme leads to the Bachelor of Technology(B.Tech) degree in Electrical and Electronics Engineering and Electrical Engineering. Specializations for the Master's level programmes is Power Systems. The programmeis of two year duration and lead to the degree of Master of Technology (M.Tech) in Electrical Engineering with respective specializations specifically mentioned in the degree certificate. The research programme in Electrical Engineering, Control Systems, Renewable Energy System, Smart Grid and other related areas leads to the Ph.D. Degree awarded by the university. In addition to these regular programmes, this department is also actively involved in conducting faculty development programmes, job-oriented short-term training programmes, continuing education programmes for engineering professionals and academic faculty.
The five major research groups in the department are the Power Systems, Industrial Power and Automation, Power Electronics and Drives, Control System and Robotics, and Renewable Energy Systems. These groups also promote interdisciplinary research that are in the domain of the faculty expertise. The laboratories and research facilities in the Department are well maintained and regularly updated. Members of the faculty are actively involved in sponsored research and consultancy works. The R&D projects undertaken in the past were sponsored by the various agencies like the Ministry of Human Resources Development (MHRD) Government of India, the Department of Science &Technology (DST) Government of India, All India Council for Technical Education, Government of India and the Odisha Renewable Energy Development Agency, Government of Odisha. A number of projects are in progress.
To produce electrical engineering graduates who are capable of taking leadership roles in technological fields in accordance to national needs and making valuable contributions to their profession and carrying out higher studies successfully.

Since inception the students of the department are imparted with fundamentals of electrical engineering, training and hands-on experience on live projects to meet the requirements new age industries. The students are encouraged to participate in the global project competitions and also encouraged to publish their research work in national and international Journals/conferences. Students have participated and won renewable energybased contests across the country. Students are participating and winners in Smart Hackathon, , IIT/NIT Techno fests, etc. Students are also joining as technocrats in PSUs.
The Department has five broad research groups:
The department also provides job oriented summer training keeping in the mind the needs of the industry and covering the courses beyond university syllabuses such as Renewable energy Systems, Power system Load flow, Computer aided power system analysis and design, Industrial Automation and Control, etc
The Electronics and Communication Engineering curriculum provides a balanced view of design and implementation electronics circuits, microprocessors, narrowband and broadband communication technology. Recent advances in microprocessor and communication technology, is making the fine lines between electronics and communication very trivial.
Electronics and Communication engineering is a dynamic and broadly interdisciplinary field that continues to experience a rapid professional growth. The curriculum is designed cover all aspects of microelectronics, circuits and systems, microprocessor design, computer and telecommunications.
The students in this discipline are offered a broad ranges of courses such as optics and laser, solid state devices and materials, digital logic and design, VLSI design, device microfabrication, computer networks, satellite communication, broadband networks and microwave engineering.
In addition, all the students in this discipline have to take core computer science courses.
The department of Electronics and Communication Engineering is being organized into various groups like Microwave & Laser communication, Satellite Communication, Signal Processing & microelectronics. It is proposed that the department should support industrial research activities in the near future.
