NATIONAL CADET CORPS

OBJECTIVES

  • The National Cadet Corps (NCC) is a youth development movement.
  • The National Cadet Corps came into existence under the NCC Act XXXI of 1948.
  • The NCC provides opportunities for all-round development with duty, commitment, discipline and moral values.
  • The NCC exposes cadets to social service, discipline and adventure training activities.

AIM OF NCC

The aims of NCC continue to meet the needs of the present socio-economic environment of the country. NCC develops character, comradeship, discipline, leadership, secular outlook, spirit of adventure and selfless service among young citizens. It also motivates youth to join the armed forces and become responsible leaders of the nation.

  • To create organized, trained and motivated youth for nation-building.
  • To motivate youth to pursue careers in the armed forces.
  • To develop discipline, leadership, adventure spirit and selfless service.

MOTTO

  • The need for an NCC motto was discussed in the 11th Central Advisory Committee meeting in 1978.
  • The final motto “Unity and Discipline” was officially adopted in 1980.
Unity and Discipline reflects the core values and spirit of the National Cadet Corps.

NCC FLAG

The NCC flag was first introduced in 1951. In 1954, the present tricolour flag was adopted to represent the inter-service character of NCC.

The three colours represent the three services: Red for Army, Deep Blue for Navy and Light Blue for Air Force. The NCC crest and letters in gold at the centre give the flag its distinct identity.

PLEDGE

We the cadets of the National Cadet Corps, do solemnly pledge that we shall always uphold the unity of India. We resolve to be disciplined and responsible citizens of our nation and undertake community service in the spirit of selflessness and concern for our fellow beings.

History and Growth of NCC

  • The NCC has its genesis in the University Corps (UC) created under the Indian Defence Act, 1917.
  • In 1920, the University Corps was replaced by the University Training Corps (UTC).
  • In 1942, UTC was renamed as the University Officers’ Training Corps (UOTC).
  • A committee under Pandit HN Kunzru was formed in 1946 which paved the way for NCC formation.
  • The National Cadet Corps officially came into existence on 15 July 1948.
  • Girls Division was introduced in 1949, followed by Air Wing in 1950 and Naval Wing in 1952.
  • NCC training became compulsory in 1963 after the Chinese aggression, and later voluntary again in 1968.
  • Today, NCC has over 13 lakh cadets across schools and colleges in India.
From 20,000 cadets in 1948 to over 13 lakh today — NCC stands as the world’s largest uniformed youth organisation.

Genesis

Genesis of NCC
  • The Cadet Corps Committee was formed on 29 September 1946 under Pt HN Kunzru.
  • Sub-committees studied youth and cadet organisations in India, Great Britain, and France.
  • The committee submitted its report to the Government of India in March 1947.
  • After independence, India faced major security and rehabilitation challenges.
  • The need for trained youth reserves led to renewed focus on military training.
  • The NCC scheme received support from provincial governments in 1948.

Birth of the NCC

  • The Kashmir War of 1948 highlighted the importance of strong armed forces.
  • The NCC Bill was placed before the Constituent Assembly in March 1948.
  • The National Cadet Corps Act was passed in April 1948.
  • Col Gopal Gurunath Bewoor became the first Director of NCC.
The NCC Act of 1948 laid the foundation for a youth movement that continues to inspire leadership and discipline.

Inauguration of NCC

  • The NCC was inaugurated on 15 July 1948 after schools and colleges reopened.
  • Initially, 96 units of Senior Division were raised across India.
  • Only 20,000 cadets joined NCC in the first year.
  • Teacher shortages slowed the growth of Junior Division units.
  • Today, NCC has grown into the largest youth uniformed organisation in the world.
From humble beginnings to a nationwide movement, NCC symbolizes discipline, unity, and service to the nation.
